I just read Mary Beth Raven Blog entry about the new Notes 8.5.1 spell checking engine.
So if you use the Standart 8.5.1 Client the new engine will use the:
com.ibm.langware.v5.dic.en_.... folders with AU..., GB..., US..., US_IBMTerms... and fr_CA which can be found in your Notes\framework\shared\eclipse\plugins directory instead the old *.dic files.
If you prefer the old spell check engine you need to add SPELL_FORCE_LEGACY=1 to your notes.ini.

SPELL_FORCE_LEGACY=1
Hey Bastian, our office has been upgrading to 8.5.1 Standard over the past couple of weeks and one of the issues we had was using the new spell checker and Lotus Notes freezing. For those that are having the issues, we added the "SPELL_FORCE_LEGACY=1" to the notes.ini and it helped some, but the issue is still occurring infrequently. Do you know of anything else that may be causing this issue?

I am having similar issues. It seems if I am running dual monitors with the secondary monitor on top of the primary in Windows Display Manager, the spell check pop up does not pop up on the viewable windows. This results in Lotus Notes hanging on the spell check. Pressing will force it through the spell check and you regain control but the problem needs to be fixed. It does not happen if the windows are placed horizontal in Windows Display Manager. Setting the SPELL_FORCE_LEGACY=1 in notes.ini drastically reduces the problem but does not eliminate it.
